You suggested using this very sideband protocol yourself just in the
last week or two.  Perhaps it was in a moment of weakness.  I think you
also suggested sharing the connection in the same way that the acl
protocol does.

I don't recall your justification.  Perhaps it was just to avoid having
to add to the v4 protocol itself.  It'd seem simpler to me just to add
compound ops and pick some unused operation numbers for them, but I
don't know.
