NFS consistency problem?

I'm afraid, its more than a second. That is, the echos were all done in less
than a second for sure, but when the problem first occurred, people were
working with the system more than one minute and the files were still not
synchronised. I'm not sure about the reproducibility of this, but I tried
opening the files, checking file sizes, calling syncs and so on. All this
(including my time to react to their yell for help took at least five
minutes.
All I could eventually do was umount/mount which did solve the issue. By now I
know that saving the current version of the file, than editing on the
non-current computer and copying back afterwards does help, but this is
surely no solution.
