My experience with that is limited (I've only setup NFSv3,4 to mount
my homes directories from different locations over the internet), and indeed
on quite any problem the mount returns a permission denied. To debug a
network trace can help, as well as running rpc.gssd and rpc.svcgssd with
-vvv. You may also want to strace rpc.idmapd.
