The client freezes are probably unrelated. If you could get us any more
detail about them we could try to debug those. (Does "freeze" mean that
the whole client locked hard, or just that processes accessing /home
hung? If the latter, sysrq-T output might help. Apologies if you
already did that and I've forgotten.)
